VOLCANIC HEART
Where the Pitons rise from the sea
The twin Pitons, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, are volcanic spires that climb straight out of the Caribbean to over 700 metres, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the unmistakable emblem of Saint Lucia. The town of Soufrière, the island's first French colonial capital, sits at their feet on a dramatic, rainforest-draped coast.
Just inland, the Sulphur Springs bills itself as the Caribbean's only "drive-in volcano", a landscape of steaming vents and bubbling pools, with warm, mineral-rich mud baths you can wallow in. Diamond Falls and its botanical gardens are minutes away, fed by the same geothermal water.
This lush southern corner is the postcard Saint Lucia, and the natural base for the island's most memorable stays, many built to frame the Pitons from your own terrace.
WILD INTERIOR
Into the rainforest
Inland, Saint Lucia rises into mountainous rainforest, the Edmund Forest and Barre de l'Isle reserves, threaded with trails, hot springs and waterfalls. The endemic Saint Lucia parrot, the national bird, lives in the canopy here, and guided hikes climb Gros Piton for those who want the island's most rewarding summit.
It is an adventurer's island: zipline through the canopy, ride an aerial tram over the treetops, ride horseback along the surf, or kayak the mangroves. Most of it is an easy day-trip from the coast, Saint Lucia is small enough to spend a morning in the forest and an afternoon on the beach.
The interior is the green, cool counterweight to the coast, and the reason the island rewards more than a week on the sand.
CARIBBEAN COAST
Bays, beaches and open sea
The west coast is a string of sheltered bays and dark-gold beaches. Marigot Bay, a palm-ringed hurricane hole the writer James Michener called the most beautiful in the Caribbean, and the marina-and-dining hub of Rodney Bay anchor the calmer north of the island.
Pigeon Island National Landmark guards the northern tip with its 18th-century fort and twin beaches, and the flat Caribbean coast is made for sailing, catamaran trips run down the shore to snorkel beneath the Pitons, past fishing villages and reef-fringed coves.
Warm year-round and reef-sheltered, this is where Saint Lucia slows down: sundowners, fresh-grilled fish and a steady trade-wind breeze.

We hiked the Tet Paul Nature Trail, snorkelled at Anse Chastanet, and the mud baths at Sulphur Springs were a laugh. The Friday night street party in Gros Islet with the grilled fish and rum punch was the best night of the whole trip.
