Day 1Arrive Quito
Welcome to Ecuador! Transfer to hotel in the historic centre. Acclimatise at 2,850m.
Day 2Quito Explorer
Walking tour of UNESCO-listed old town. Visit the Equator monument.
Day 3Otavalo Market
Visit South America's most famous indigenous market. Cuicocha Crater Lake hike.
Day 4Cotopaxi National Park
Drive to Cotopaxi. Afternoon acclimatisation hike to the Jose Rivas refuge (4,800m).
Day 5Cotopaxi Summit Attempt
Pre-dawn summit bid on the 5,897m volcano (for experienced trekkers). Alternative: lower altitude hike.
Day 6Quilotoa Trek Day 1
Begin the stunning Quilotoa Loop trek through highland villages.
Day 7Quilotoa Trek Day 2
Continue through dramatic landscapes to the turquoise crater lake.
Day 8Quilotoa Trek Day 3
Descend to the crater lake for a canoe trip. Transfer to Banos.
Day 9Banos Adventure
Mountain biking the Route of Waterfalls. Hot springs in the evening.
Day 10Amazon Transfer
Descend to the Amazon basin. Settle into jungle eco-lodge.
Day 11Amazon Exploration
Canoe trips, jungle hikes, and wildlife spotting with indigenous guides.
Day 12Amazon to Quito
Morning bird watching. Return to Quito for farewell dinner.
Day 13Departure
Transfer to airport. Optional Galapagos extension available.

Spent twelve days in mainland Ecuador and was blown away by the diversity. The cloud forest at Mindo had incredible birdwatching, we spotted toucans and hummingbirds within the first hour. The indigenous market at Otavalo was colourful and authentic, and the Amazon lodge near Tena gave us a taste of the jungle. Good food throughout, especially the llapingachos. Solid four stars, the roads can be a bit hair-raising.

Ecuador packs an extraordinary amount into a small country. We started in Quito, the old town is a UNESCO gem, then took the train to the Avenue of Volcanoes. Cotopaxi on a clear day is unforgettable. The highlight was Baños: zip-lining over canyons, the swing at the edge of the world, and soaking in thermal baths afterwards. Fabian's planning was meticulous.
