Angel Falls, Mount Roraima, the Orinoco Delta and the pristine Caribbean waters of Los Roques — discover South America’s best-kept secret.
FCDO Travel Advisory: The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Venezuela. This advisory is expected to be reviewed as political conditions evolve. Travelfab is preparing Venezuela packages for when the advisory is lifted. Venezuela is one of the most geographically diverse countries on earth. Home to the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, the oldest geological formations on the planet, one of the great river deltas of the Americas, and a Caribbean archipelago that rivals the Maldives for sheer beauty — yet receives a fraction of the visitors.
Angel Falls (Salto Ángel) plunges 979 metres from the summit of Auyantepui into the jungle below, making it the tallest waterfall in the world. Set within the vast Canaima National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site larger than Belgium — the falls can only be reached by canoe through pristine rainforest, making the journey as extraordinary as the destination itself.
The Orinoco Delta is one of the world’s great river systems, a maze of channels and islands that is home to the indigenous Warao people, river dolphins, howler monkeys, macaws, caiman and an astonishing diversity of birdlife. Visiting the delta is a genuine wilderness experience, far removed from conventional tourism.
Los Roques is a protected national park archipelago of over 350 islands, cays and sandbars in the southern Caribbean. Turquoise water, white sand, virtually no development — this is the Caribbean as it used to be, decades before mass tourism arrived elsewhere.
Mount Roraima (2,810m) is one of the oldest geological formations on earth and the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Lost World. The summit plateau is a surreal landscape of rock formations, crystal pools and endemic plants found nowhere else on earth. The trek to the top is one of South America’s great adventures, crossing the Gran Sabana’s rolling savannah before ascending through cloud forest to a genuinely otherworldly summit.
After years of political and economic upheaval, Venezuela is beginning a new chapter. The tourism infrastructure that once attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year still exists — the lodges, the guides, the canoe routes, the domestic flight network — but the crowds do not. For the adventurous traveller, this is a rare window to experience one of the most spectacular countries in the Americas in near-total solitude.
Venezuela’s natural attractions are simply too extraordinary to remain off the map. Angel Falls, Roraima, Canaima, Los Roques and the Orinoco Delta are world-class destinations by any measure. As conditions continue to improve and international flights resume, early visitors will experience these wonders at their most pristine and uncrowded.
Travelfab is working with experienced local operators who have maintained their expertise and infrastructure throughout the difficult years. When the FCDO advisory is lifted, we will be ready to offer fully supported, ATOL-protected holidays to Venezuela — and we expect demand to be high.
Venezuela lies between 1° and 12° north of the equator, giving it a tropical climate with two main seasons: a dry season (December to April) and a rainy season (May to October). The best time to visit depends on what you want to see.
The rainy season is actually the best time to visit Canaima National Park and Angel Falls. Higher water levels make the canoe journey to the base of Angel Falls possible (in the dry season, water levels can be too low for canoes to navigate the rivers). The falls themselves are at their most spectacular when fed by heavy rains. Internal flights to Canaima typically operate during this season.
The dry season offers the most reliable weather for beach holidays at Los Roques, city visits and general travel around the country. However, some jungle excursions and Canaima canoe trips may be limited. Mount Roraima is accessible year-round, though the rainy season makes the trek more challenging but also more dramatic.
The Orinoco Delta can be visited at any time of year, as can Caracas. Los Roques has pleasant conditions year-round but is at its best from December to July. The Mount Roraima trek operates throughout the year, with July and August being the wettest months.
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Venezuela. The most common routing is via Madrid with Air Europa or Iberia, connecting at Madrid Barajas airport for the onward flight to Caracas (Simón Bolívar International Airport, CCS). Total travel time is approximately 14–16 hours including the connection.
TAP Air Portugal also offers connections via Lisbon, which can sometimes offer competitive fares and convenient timings.
Internal flights within Venezuela connect Caracas to Canaima (during the rainy season), Puerto Ordaz, Los Roques and other regional airports. These flights are included in both of our Venezuela holiday packages.
UK citizens do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Venezuela. You will need a valid passport with at least six months’ validity from your date of entry. You may be asked to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds.
