Destination Guides

Colombia and Ecuador sit side by side on South America's Pacific coast, yet they offer remarkably different experiences for UK travellers. Both countries are safe, affordable, and more popular than ever with travelers, but which destination is the best fit for your next South American trip? According to the World Economic Forum, Colombia welcomed over 7 million non-resident visitors in 2024, outpacing pre-pandemic figures. Our Latin America specialists are often asked this question and agree there is no clear winner. Colombia is especially notable for its vibrant diversity, urban flair, and size, rendering it ideal for travelers who want variety and a dynamic city experience. Ecuador distinguishes itself with accessible natural wonders and authentic indigenous culture, especially the world-renowned Galapagos Islands, providing experiences found nowhere else.

This guide compares the two across the dimensions that matter to UK travellers: culture, nature, food, adventure, logistics and cost. By the end, you should have a clear sense of which country suits your priorities.

Culture and History

Colombia

Colombia's culture blends Caribbean flair, colonial elegance, and modern transformation. Cartagena's walled Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases pastel mansions and flowered balconies. Bogota provides notable museums, lively street art, and top restaurants.

The country's shift from conflict to tourism is compelling. Visiting once-dangerous Comuna 13, now an outdoor gallery, provides a strong glimpse of fortitude.

Ecuador

Ecuador's culture is distinct. Quito's colonial centre, a UNESCO site, is among Latin America's best-preserved, with ornate baroque churches older than those in Colombia. The city sits at 2,850 metres in an Andean valley lined with volcanoes.

Ecuador is outstanding in indigenous culture. The Otavalo market is famous for Kichwa textiles. The Amazon basin offers immersive stays with communities keeping traditional ways alive—a deeper cultural encounter than in Colombia's urban areas.

Verdict: Choose Colombia for cosmopolitan culture, colonial grandeur, and modern reinvention. Choose Ecuador for native heritage, baroque architecture, and intimate community encounters.

Landscapes and Nature

Colombia

Colombia spans the Caribbean coastline, Andean peaks, Pacific rainforest, Amazon jungle and vast eastern plains (los Llanos). This variety is staggering. In a single trip you can swim in turquoise Caribbean water at the Rosario Islands, hike through cloud forest in the Cocora Valley among 60-metre wax palms, and explore the jungle-backed beaches of Tayrona National Park where the Sierra Nevada meets the sea.

Colombia is one of the world's most biodiverse countries — second only to Brazil in total species count, with more bird species than any other nation on earth.

Ecuador

Ecuador packs an almost absurd amount of geographical variety into a country roughly the size of the United Kingdom. Within a few hours' drive, you move from Pacific beaches through Andean highlands over 4,000 metres to the Amazon rainforest at sea level. The country straddles the equator and contains 47 volcanoes, including active Cotopaxi (5,897 metres) and snow-capped Chimborazo (6,268 metres, technically the closest point on earth to the sun).

The Galapagos Islands, 1,000 km off the coast, are a unique wildlife destination. See giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and sea lions that show no fear. Few worldwide experiences compare.

The verdict: Colombia for Caribbean beaches and cultural landscapes. Ecuador for the volcanic Andes, Amazon immersion and the unrivalled Galapagos.

Food and Drink

Colombia

Colombian food is hearty and regional. Bandeja Paisa is a rich dish with beans, rice, and meats. Bogota's ajiaco is a classic chicken soup. On the coast, ceviche uses coconut and spices, and arepas appear at every meal.

Colombian coffee is famous. Visiting a finca and tasting fresh-roasted beans is a top South American experience. The national spirit, aguardiente, is anise-flavoured and customary at celebrations.

Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena have sophisticated dining. Restaurants like Leo Cocina y Cava regularly appear on regional best lists.

Ecuador

Ecuadorian food is lesser known but satisfying. Locro de papa (potato soup), encebollado (tuna stew), and llapingachos (potato patties) are staples in the highlands. It is a highlight; ceviche de camaron is a national favourite. Ecuador produces premium cacao, with chocolate-making workshops now popular among visitors.

Verdict: Choose Colombia for coffee, Caribbean flavours, and emerging fine dining. Choose Ecuador for highland comfort food, coastal ceviche, and world-class chocolate.

Adventure Activities

Both countries offer outstanding adventure experiences, though the flavour differs.

Colombia

  • Cocora Valley hiking — Walk among the world's tallest palm trees in misty cloud forest

  • Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) trek — A 4-5 day jungle trek to a pre-Colombian archaeological site that predates Machu Picchu by 650 years

  • Tayrona National Park — Jungle trekking to pristine Caribbean beaches

  • Guatape — Climb 740 steps up the Piedra del Penol rock for extraordinary lake views

  • Whale watching — Humpback whales migrate to Colombia's Pacific coast (July-October)

  • Diving — San Andres and Providencia offer Caribbean reef diving

Ecuador

  • Galapagos wildlife encounters — Snorkel with sea lions, walk among giant tortoises, dive with hammerhead sharks

  • Cotopaxi volcano — Summit one of the world's highest active volcanoes (5,897 metres)

  • Amazon rainforest lodges — Multi-day stays deep in primary rainforest with indigenous guides

  • Avenue of Volcanoes — Hike and cycle the Andean corridor between Quito and Cuenca, passing snow-capped peaks and highland villages

  • Banos — Ecuador's adventure capital: canyoning, rafting, zip-lining, and the famous Swing at the End of the World

  • Quilotoa Loop — A scenic highland trek through indigenous villages around a volcanic crater lake

The verdict: Choose Colombia for jungle treks, Caribbean water sports, and cultural adventures. Choose Ecuador for volcanic summits, Galapagos wildlife, and adrenaline activities.

Logistics from the UK

Flights

Colombia is now one of South America's most accessible destinations from the UK. Avianca operates daily direct flights from London Heathrow to Bogotá, with a flight time of approximately 10 hours and 19 minutes and no connections required. Alternatively, connect via Madrid (Iberia) or Miami (American Airlines) for flights to Bogota or Cartagena. Ecuador has no direct flights from the UK. Connect via Madrid, Amsterdam, or Miami to Quito or Guayaquil. Journey time is 14-17 hours, usually with one stop.

Visas

Neither country requires a visa for UK passport holders. Colombia allows stays of up to 90 days. Ecuador allows stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period. Both require a passport valid for at least 6 months.

Time Zones

Colombia is GMT-5 (the same as Eastern Standard Time in the US). Ecuador is GMT-5 on the mainland and GMT-6 in the Galapagos. Both are 5 hours behind the UK during GMT.

Internal Travel

Colombia is a large country. Internal flights between Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin and Santa Marta take 1-2 hours and are affordable. Ground travel between major cities takes 8-12 hours by road.

Ecuador's compact size is a genuine advantage. From Quito, the coast, highlands, or Amazon are reachable in a day by road. Flights to the Galapagos from Quito or Guayaquil take about 2 hours.

The verdict: Colombia wins on direct UK flights. Ecuador wins on compact internal travel. Both are visa-free.

Cost Comparison

Both countries offer good value for UK travellers, with the pound stretching further than in many European destinations.

According to Livingcost.org, the average cost of living in Colombia is about 4% higher than in Ecuador, so day-to-day expenses are generally slightly less expensive in Ecuador. A good restaurant meal in Bogota or Medellin costs £8-15. Mid-range hotels run £50-100 per night. Domestic flights are £40-80. A tailor-made 10-night Colombia holiday with Travelfab starts from approximately £1,899 per person including flights from the UK, boutique hotels and guided experiences. See our Colombia's Favourites itinerary for details.

Ecuador is similarly affordable on the mainland, but the Galapagos significantly increases the overall trip cost. Galapagos cruises and island-hopping packages add £1,500-4,000 to the budget depending on duration and vessel. However, mainland Ecuador alone — Quito, the highlands, the Amazon — can be done at a similar cost to Colombia.

The verdict: Similar costs on the mainland. Colombia is more affordable overall. Ecuador, with the Galapagos, requires a larger budget but delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Best Time to Visit

Colombia

Colombia is a year-round destination. The main dry season runs December to March, with a second dry spell in July and August. The Coffee Region and Caribbean coast are best in these windows. Bogotá and Medellín enjoy spring-like temperatures year-round due to their high altitude.

Ecuador

Ecuador's seasons vary by region. The mainland dry season runs June to September in the highlands, though Quito is pleasant year-round. The coast is driest from June to November. The Galapagos is best from June to December for calmer seas and wildlife activity, though January to May brings warmer water temperatures better for snorkelling.

The verdict: Both are year-round destinations. Colombia's peak coincides with UK winter holidays (December-March). Ecuador's Galapagos season peaks from June to December.
