You start in Bogotá, high in the Andes, with the Salt Cathedral and the gold of the Gold Museum, fly to the coffee region for the wax palms of the Cocora Valley, then on to Medellín and the painted town of Guatapé, and finish on the Caribbean in the walled city of Cartagena. Your Itinerary
Day 1: London to Bogotá
Fly from London to Bogotá. Your guide meets you at the airport and takes you to the hotel. Bogotá sits at 2,640 metres, so the rest of the day is yours to take gently.
Day 2: Zipaquirá and the Salt Cathedral
North out of the city to Zipaquirá, an Andean town built on salt. Its Salt Cathedral was carved by the miners themselves, a chain of chapels and a vast nave lit deep inside the old mine.
Day 3: Bogotá old town, then fly to Pereira
La Candelaria, the old town: street art, colonial churches and Plaza Bolívar, the Gold Museum with its 36,000 pre-Columbian pieces, the Botero Museum, and the view from Monserrate at over 3,100 metres. Then the short flight to Pereira in the coffee region.
Day 4: Cocora Valley and Salento
By Willys jeep, the old coffee-country workhorse, into the Cocora Valley for a guided walk under the wax palms and into the cloud forest. Afterwards the town of Salento, with its painted balconies and craft shops.
Day 5: A coffee farm, then fly to Medellín
A morning on a coffee farm, following the bean from the plant to the cup: picking, sorting, roasting and brewing, with a tasting at the end. In the afternoon you fly to Medellín.
Day 6: Medellín: Comuna 13 and the flower farms
The metro and metro cable to Comuna 13, once the most dangerous neighbourhood in the city and now its best known, with a local guide to explain how it changed. In the afternoon, a flower farm in Santa Elena, home of the silleteros who carry their flowers down the mountain every August.
Day 7: Santa Fe de Antioquia
West to Santa Fe de Antioquia, the old colonial capital of the region, a town of whitewashed houses and eight churches. You walk the streets, visit the Juan del Corral museum and see the Puente de Occidente, a long suspension bridge over the Cauca river.
Day 8: Guatapé and El Peñol, then fly to Cartagena
Out to Guatapé, where every house has a painted panel along its base, and the granite rock of El Peñol, with more than 700 steps to a view across the lakes. Then the flight to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast.
Day 9: Cartagena
The view from the convent on La Popa hill, the San Felipe fortress that kept the pirates out, then a walk through the walled city from the Clock Tower gate to the church of San Pedro Claver and the Plaza de Santo Domingo.
Day 10: Cartagena at your own pace
A free day. Walk the walls at sunset, spend the afternoon in Getsemaní, or ask us about a boat out to the Rosario islands.
Day 11: Cartagena to London
Transfer to the airport for the flight home via Bogotá.
